this past weekend was the final of the sunday football matches.. rat trap vs. lambs river. days before i had watched both the anguishing match with shanice, chubby, keira and yanique between argentina and germany, which left me repeatedly asking, “but, why???” and the heroic match between holland and brazil… which left them asking, “but, why???” i felt it had evened out. friday night i went with yanique and some friends to a dead yard in cambridge.. i met some new faces and got to see parts of cambridge i had never explored. i managed to wake up fairly early to the sounds of small children outside my window. sunday is asha and my dinner day… it’s a ritual we have, cooking sunday dinner together. this sunday she came with 2 pods of ackee in hand. i supplied the saltfish, onions, garlic and sweet pepper and cudjoe donated a breadfruit. we feasted on 2 spoonfuls each of ackee and saltfish and enough breadfruit to make you bust. a game of scrabble later we split ways to reconvene later at the football match.
the first match was a friendly match to see who would take third place. seaford town wasn’t so fortunate.. belvedere took third. the long awaited final took center stage just around 7:30pm. large sporting lights had been strategically placed around the field and it made it glisten ever so magically. the place was packed to the brim with people and vendors, more so than any other rather packed match. i saw people i knew from all over, mobay to lambs river to cambridge to rat trap to belvedere to amity to st. leonards …. it was some serious energy flowing. rat trap proved victorious and made 2 beautiful goals against lambs river and the match ended with a large crowd running on the field to cheer the winners’ success. so began the after-party. 2 sound systems larger than life and one tent housing the selectors. the party went on till about 1am and then everyone disbanded, heading home grumbling about how it could have gone on and on. despite the grumbling it was a great time had by one and all, young and old.
lucky for me, this morning came all too soon and i must now make my way to school to start summer classes. some strong coffee should give me just the kick i need… or so i hope.
